This is a new course that I created and taught at the University of Aruba (2017-2023). Most Arubans learn to speak several languages since childhood, but they are seldom asked to engage in reflective and critical thinking about their linguistic situation -- is it unique? Moreover, many students grow up hearing myths and half-truths about languages and "dialects", about how some languages are more "valuable" and "beautiful" than others.
In addition, the course touched upon language-related topics that piqued their curiosity, such as sign languages and invented languages (Dothraki, Elvish, etc.) seen in global media.
